NMCN plc was a UK-based construction and civil engineering group focused on major built environment and critical national infrastructure projects. Founded in 1946, it evolved from North Midland Construction Company Limited and North Midland Construction PLC before rebranding as NMCN, with its main headquarters at Hucknall Under Huthwaite, England and a network of around 10–12 regional offices and workshops across the UK. The company positioned itself as a national infrastructure provider with two core areas of operation: the built environment, covering building, highways and telecoms projects, and water, covering large-scale water networks and treatment plants.
Operationally, NMCN was organised into divisions spanning building, civil engineering, highways, utilities and NMCNomenca. The building division delivered new-build and refurbishment schemes in the Midlands, while civil engineering served power generation, power distribution, waste-to-energy and other infrastructure works for public- and private-sector clients. The highways division designed and delivered road projects across the UK, and the utilities and NMCNomenca businesses provided mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation (MEICA) products and services, including non‑infrastructure frameworks for Severn Trent Water. The water segment generated turnover of £282.6 million in 2019, with the broader water business later described as having annual revenues of about £100 million. NMCN also undertook infrastructure and non‑infrastructure projects for 10 of the largest UK water sector companies and worked for clients such as Virgin Media, BT Openreach, NHS, Severn Trent, EDF Energy and IKEA.
The group employed more than 1,800 people at its peak and maintained 12 regional offices. Strategic initiatives included leadership changes, such as the appointment of John Homer and later Lee Marks as chief executive officer, expansion of highways and telecoms business units, and a sustainability agenda articulated through its Positive Impact Plan 2025 and an employee volunteering policy. After financial strain related to loss‑making water contracts and working‑capital pressures, NMCN attempted a £24 million recapitalisation in 2021 but subsequently entered administration in October 2021, after which key business units, including the water division and specialist subsidiaries Nomenca and Lintott, were sold to other UK contractors.
