N1 A/S

N1 A/S is an electricity network company in Denmark and the largest electricity grid operator in Jutland. Headquartered in Esbjerg and owned by Norlys, it operates distribution infrastructure that supplies power to around 800,000 homes and businesses across western Denmark. The company functions as a regional grid operator, focusing on reliable distribution rather than power generation or retail supply. N1 manages day-to-day network operations, including monitoring grid status and handling planned and unplanned outages. Customers can access real-time information on ongoing, planned and completed interruptions through N1’s online operations map. The company also administers tariffs and offers schemes such as local collective tariffing, which allows groups of network customers to be billed via a shared virtual metering point. This model is designed to encourage simultaneous consumption and production, reduce peak loading of the grid, limit the need for costly reinforcement and support the wider green transition. The company invests heavily in grid modernisation and digital capabilities. It has built a comprehensive geographic information system (GIS) environment that underpins planning, engineering and real-time operations. During a severe storm surge in Denmark in 2023, N1 and its partner Geoinfo A/S rapidly deployed an ArcGIS-based situational awareness tool integrating flood-risk maps with detailed asset data. This enabled the operator to identify installations at risk, proactively de-energise cable cabinets and minimise both outages and asset damage. N1 plans to extend this GIS-based approach to broader emergency planning and climate-risk adaptation, including integration with live hydrological forecasts and analysis of other weather-related threats.
