About
Mutual Energy is a mutual, wholly debt-financed company that owns and operates strategically important gas and electricity transmission assets in Northern Ireland in the long-term interests of energy consumers. With no shareholders and a membership structure representing consumers, it reinvests surpluses rather than paying dividends, using a low cost of capital to reduce network charges. In 2022–23 its assets imported around 17.1 TWh of gas and 1.0 TWh of electricity, equivalent to roughly 35% of Northern Ireland’s total energy use, and during a week in December 2024 they delivered about 90% of the region’s electricity and gas consumption. Mutual Energy has returned millions of pounds to customers through tariff rebates and targeted charitable donations and estimates cumulative savings of more than £200 million for consumers due to its financing model.
Operationally, the company’s electricity business centres on the 500 MW HVDC Moyle Interconnector between Northern Ireland and Scotland, which transfers significant volumes of power, provides ancillary services to both connected grids and participates in coupled GB–SEM intraday markets. Its gas business includes the Scotland to Northern Ireland Pipeline (SNIP), the Belfast Gas Transmission Pipeline and the West Transmission Pipeline, along with other onshore high-pressure gas assets. Mutual Energy is also a joint venture partner in the Gas Market Operator for Northern Ireland (GMO NI) and acts as the Northern Ireland Network Emergency Co-ordinator, responsible for coordinating responses to gas supply emergencies across all licensed operators.
The company focuses on high standards of safety, reliability and efficiency, maintaining ISO-certified operations and investing in asset upgrades such as refurbishment of the Moyle Interconnector control system. Through a dedicated Energy Transition function it engages in policy development and pathfinder projects in areas including offshore grids, renewable gas networks, hydrogen pipelines, large-scale energy storage, geothermal energy and carbon capture, and has begun on-site decarbonisation measures such as installing solar photovoltaic capacity at its converter facilities.
