Masdar, formally Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, is a United Arab Emirates state‑owned renewable energy company headquartered in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi. Established in 2006 to advance the UAE’s diversification and clean‑energy agenda, it is jointly owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) and Mubadala Investment Company, with the Government of Abu Dhabi as ultimate owner. Masdar develops, invests in, owns and operates renewable energy and low‑carbon projects including utility‑scale solar and wind power plants, battery energy storage systems, community‑scale and off‑grid projects, waste‑to‑energy, solar‑powered desalination and other efficiency‑focused and technology demonstration schemes.
The company has built a global portfolio in more than 40 countries across six continents. Its developed and partnered projects represent over 65 GW of clean energy capacity, with historical investments and commitments exceeding US$30 billion and a strategy to reach at least 100 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. Masdar is also expanding a dedicated green hydrogen business and aims to be a leading producer of green hydrogen by 2030. Regionally, it has delivered flagship UAE assets such as the Masdar City solar photovoltaic plant, Shams 1 concentrating solar power station and a renewable‑energy‑powered desalination program, and it led the development of Masdar City as a low‑carbon urban district.
Internationally, Masdar holds and is acquiring stakes in major platforms and projects, including Terra‑Gen in the United States and Saeta in Spain and Portugal, and participates in large offshore wind developments such as the UK’s Dogger Bank. Through subsidiaries such as Masdar Americas, it manages gigawatt‑scale wind, solar and storage portfolios in key markets. Masdar finances growth under a Green Finance Framework, issuing multiple green bonds and maintaining strong investment‑grade credit ratings to support transparent funding of new “dark green” projects aligned with global net‑zero objectives.
