Manx Utilities Authority (Manx Utilities) is a statutory board of the Isle of Man Government that provides core utility services across the Isle of Man. Formed in April 2014 through the merger of the Manx Electricity Authority and the Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority, it supplies households, businesses and public-sector customers with electricity, natural gas transmission, potable water and wastewater collection and treatment. The organisation is responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity on the island, billing and revenue collection, and the high‑pressure natural gas transmission network which links into local distribution operated by Manx Gas. It reports a turnover of around £100 million and is sponsored by the Department of Infrastructure.
Manx Utilities owns and operates three power stations and a 65 MW subsea electricity interconnector to the North West of England, through which it trades power with UK market participants, importing and exporting electricity. It also manages extensive on‑island networks, including 540 km of overhead power lines and 1,380 km of underground cable, and supplements supply with hydro generation, an energy‑from‑waste plant and small‑scale domestic renewables. The authority operates a large‑capacity subsea fibre‑optic cable adjacent to the power cable, with commercial telecommunications and subsea cable activities delivered through subsidiaries including e‑llan Communications and Manx Cable Company Limited. Strategic initiatives include an island‑wide smart electricity meter rollout of nearly 50,000 meters, the SmarterLiving app and SmarterPAYG platform, the Energy Eye data service for large users, and planning for onshore solar (around 10 MW) and a 20 MW onshore wind farm to support the Isle of Man’s net‑zero and energy‑transition objectives, alongside work with Ørsted on options for a power‑to‑island link from future offshore wind.
