About
Jönköping Energi is a municipally owned energy and communications utility serving the city of Jönköping and surrounding region in Sweden. Founded in 1907 and owned by Jönköpings kommun, the company supplies electricity, district heating, district cooling, electricity grid services and city network/communication solutions via a local infrastructure. It provides electricity to about 57,000 customers and reports annual sales of roughly SEK 1.2–1.3 billion with around 300 employees, with profits reinvested in the group, the municipality and local initiatives. Its vision is described as being a positive force for a good society, contributing to long‑term sustainable development.
On the production side, Jönköping Energi generates electricity from renewable and recycled fuels, including biofuels and waste, and owns the Torsvik waste‑to‑energy combined heat and power plant near Jönköping. Torsvik is a 16.2 MW biopower facility commissioned in 2006 that uses industrial waste, municipal solid waste and wood by‑products to produce about 100 GWh of electricity per year, alongside heat. In 2025 the company inaugurated a 10 MW/MWh large‑scale battery system at Torsvik to provide grid balancing, outage preparedness and flexible capacity for the green energy transition. The utility is also expanding electric transport infrastructure, procuring and operating high‑power pantograph charging for city bus lines and tendering further installation services for normal and fast charging.
Strategically, Jönköping Energi is investing heavily in its electricity network through a ten‑year network development plan, including new 130 kV underground lines to increase transfer capacity and reliability, while promoting demand‑based tariffs and customer flexibility. It collaborates with partners such as Sectra for managed detection and response to protect critical IT/OT systems, Utilifeed for data‑driven optimisation of district heating substations and pricing, and participates as an owner in Modity, an energy trading company aimed at developing advanced energy trading and optimisation services.
