About
INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS (IIN) is a Norwegian upstream oil and gas company engaged in the exploration for, development and production of crude oil and natural gas on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The company entered the NCS in 1989 by acquiring a stake in the Snorre field and changed its name from Idemitsu Petroleum Norge AS to INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS in January 2022 following a change in its ultimate majority shareholder. IIN is part of the Japanese INPEX Group and is wholly owned by INPEX Norway Co., Ltd., in which INPEX Corporation holds 50.5 percent of the shares and Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. holds 49.5 percent. Its office is located in Lysaker in Bærum municipality, where it employs around 80 professionals.
IIN holds a broad portfolio on the NCS, combining mature production, developments and exploration. It has reported participating interests in 10 producing fields in 2022–2023 and 8 producing fields in 2024, including key positions in the Snorre oil field and associated PL057 and PL089 licences, as well as interests in Valhall/Hod, Fram, Vega and Duva. In 2023 its average production was about 28,500 barrels of oil equivalent per day, approximately 70 percent oil and 30 percent gas. The company is operator on several exploration licences and has been repeatedly awarded new production licences in Norway’s APA rounds, supporting continued growth around the northern North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea.
IIN is increasingly involved in decarbonisation initiatives linked to its upstream portfolio. The Snorre project began receiving power from the Hywind Tampen floating offshore wind farm in 2023, and in December 2024 IIN agreed to acquire a 30 percent non-operated stake in the large-scale Trudvang CCS project, its second decarbonisation initiative. As a subsidiary of INPEX, IIN aligns with INPEX Vision 2035, which focuses on a cleaner upstream portfolio and contributions to a net zero carbon society by 2050. The company also pursues long-standing corporate social responsibility activities in Norway, including multi-decade support for the MUNCH museum in Oslo.
