Haugaland Kraft Nett AS, renamed Fagne in 2022, operates as the regional electricity distribution system operator in parts of Western Norway. As a subsidiary within the Haugaland Kraft group, it owns and operates regional transmission and distribution networks across Haugalandet, Sunnhordland and inner Ryfylke, covering roughly 5,000 km² and supplying power to around 150,000 inhabitants in 12 municipalities. The company manages both regional grid and lower-voltage distribution assets, transmitting on the order of several thousand GWh annually, and has also acquired additional distribution grid assets from Statnett in line with the national separation between transmission and distribution ownership.
The company’s core role in the energy value chain is to ensure secure and efficient delivery of largely renewable Norwegian power to households, industry and public institutions. It is investing in network upgrades and new capacity, including reinforcement of urban underground cables, new 132 kV overhead lines and replacement of ageing submarine cables to island communities, to strengthen supply security and accommodate rising electrification and new industrial loads. Haugaland Kraft Nett/Fagne is also developing digital transformer stations and extensive sensor-based monitoring to enable remote supervision, fault detection and condition-based maintenance.
Strategically, the company has been an early mover on flexibility markets and data-driven grid operation. In collaboration with EY Skye, it has built a system that integrates smart meter data, substation sensors and weather forecasts with machine-learning models to predict consumption and grid load several days ahead. A trading robot interfaces with the NODES marketplace to procure demand response and local generation flexibility from both large and small customers, allowing voltage management, reduction or postponement of costly grid reinforcements and more effective integration of local wind and solar production.
