Guernsey Electricity

Guernsey Electricity Limited is a vertically integrated power utility that imports, generates, transmits and distributes electricity on the island of Guernsey. Originating from an 1898 concession of Edmondson’s Electricity Corporation and incorporated in 1907 as Guernsey Electric Light & Power Company, it became the States Electricity Board in 1932 and was commercialised as Guernsey Electricity Ltd in 2001. The company is owned by the States of Guernsey and its core activities in generation, conveyance and supply are regulated by the Guernsey Competition and Regulatory Authorities. It is the sole licensed distributor and effective sole retailer of electricity to domestic and commercial consumers on the island, with operations centred on a subsea interconnection to Jersey and France through the Channel Islands Electricity Grid joint venture and on-island generation at Vale Power Station. Guernsey Electricity supplies the majority of the island’s demand via imported low‑carbon electricity, with more than 90% of distributed power in recent years coming through the subsea cable and the balance generated on-island by oil‑fired diesel engines and gas turbines maintained for backup and peak demand. The company operates community-scale solar PV, buys excess generation from rooftop solar, and runs a retail store that sells domestic appliances and home entertainment products. Employing around 200 staff across engineering, power station maintenance, network operations, retail, plumbing, finance and customer service, it undertakes continuous investment in grid infrastructure, including a new bulk supply point and 6.5 km 33 kV cable to Princess Elizabeth Hospital. Strategically, Guernsey Electricity is aligned with the States of Guernsey’s Electricity Strategy to 2050, focusing on additional interconnection to Europe, demand management, and expanding local renewables to decarbonise supply and support the island’s net-zero and carbon‑reduction targets.
