Gefyra S.A. is a Greek concession company established in 1995 by VINCI and six Greek construction companies to develop and manage the Rion–Antirion Bridge, officially the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge, which links Rio in the Peloponnese with Antirrio on mainland Greece. Headquartered in Chalandri, Attica, the company was created specifically to enter into and implement a 42‑year concession contract with the Greek state covering the bridge’s design, construction, financing, maintenance and operation. The bridge is a 2.8 km multi‑span cable‑stayed structure carrying the A5 motorway (E55/E65) across the Gulf of Corinth and is regarded as a technically demanding project because of deep waters, loose seabed materials and high seismicity in the area.
During the construction phase, which concluded in August 2004, Gefyra S.A. managed the overall financial scheme and day‑to‑day funding requirements, coordinating more than 50 agreements including the main construction joint‑venture contract and detailed financing arrangements with lenders such as the European Investment Bank. Since the start of operations, it has been responsible for asset management, inspections, heavy and routine maintenance, and improvement works to keep the bridge at the forefront of technical developments, while ensuring uninterrupted 24/7/365 road connectivity. The company has delegated day‑to‑day operation under a multi‑year O&M agreement to its affiliated operator Gefyra Litourgia S.A., which handles traffic management, control centre operations, incident response, tolling and customer service.
Gefyra S.A.’s stated objectives include the social and economic upgrading of Western Greece through reliable transport infrastructure and support for sustainable development in local communities. In line with an environmental strategy, measures on the bridge have included suspension of decorative lighting during the European electricity crisis and initiatives that have contributed to an 84.5% reduction of the bridge’s carbon footprint between 2015 and 2022. The company has also supported electric vehicle use by hosting EV charging infrastructure at the bridge site.
