Fingrid Oyj is Finland’s national transmission system operator and a Finnish public limited liability company that owns and operates the country’s high-voltage main grid. Its nationwide network forms the backbone of the Finnish power system, transmitting electricity from major power plants to energy‑intensive industrial customers and regional distribution networks. The grid comprises more than 14,000 kilometres of 400, 220 and 110 kilovolt transmission lines and over one hundred substations. Fingrid is a state‑regulated natural monopoly whose statutory duties include securing reliable electricity supply and maintaining the real‑time balance between electricity production and consumption across Finland, supported when necessary by reserve power plants.
Fingrid’s operations are deeply integrated into the Nordic and wider European power systems. The Finnish grid is part of the joint Nordic power system, with high‑voltage direct current links to Continental Europe and to Estonia, including the Estlink 2 interconnection, and major alternating‑current and DC connections to Sweden such as the Aurora Line, developed jointly with Svenska kraftnät. These cross‑border links underpin both system security and a functioning, market‑based electricity market. Fingrid provides transmission grid services and electricity market services, including grid operation, maintenance and development, connection of production and consumption, system security services, imbalance settlement and facilitation of power trading. Through subsidiaries Finextra Oy and Fingrid Datahub Oy and associate eSett Oy, it also handles peak‑load capacity, guarantees of origin and centralised information exchange and balance settlement in the Nordic market.
Strategically, Fingrid’s mission is to secure reliable and cost‑effective electricity for customers and society and to shape a clean, market‑oriented power system. It is implementing a long‑term main‑grid development programme, with a ten‑year investment plan of around EUR 5.2 billion to 2035 to reinforce domestic transmission capacity, enable large new industrial loads, integrate increasing volumes of renewable generation and strengthen cross‑border interconnections such as Aurora Line 2, EstLink 3 and Fenno‑Skan 3. In 2025, Fingrid transmitted roughly 84% of electricity in Finland through its own network, achieved a transmission reliability of 99.99995%, generated turnover of EUR 1,118.5 million and employed an average of 622 people. The company has committed to mitigating the climate impacts of grid construction and is preparing science‑based greenhouse‑gas reduction targets while supporting Finland’s broader green transition and electrification.
