EWE NETZ GmbH is the regulated distribution system operator of the EWE Group and is majority-owned by EWE AG alongside municipal shareholders from the Ems-Weser-Elbe region. From its network areas in north‑west Germany and parts of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, it plans, builds and operates electricity, natural gas, drinking water and telecommunications networks, as well as street lighting infrastructures. In 2023 the company recorded IFRS revenues of around EUR 2.02 billion, investments of EUR 349 million and an average workforce of about 1,800 employees. Its technical asset base includes roughly 84,000 km of electricity grids, 58,000 km of gas grids, 65,000 km of telecommunications networks and 2,600 km of water networks, with around two million house connections and 148 substations and numerous transformer stations and switching facilities.
EWE NETZ positions itself as an enabler of the energy transition by integrating large volumes of decentralised renewable generation. In its north‑west German network more than 100,000 renewable plants with over 7,400 MW of capacity feed in around 11 TWh per year, equivalent to more than 100 per cent of regional consumption. The company develops smart grids and digital tools, for example through the SINTEG “enera” model region and GIS‑based network planning, to manage volatile wind and solar feed‑in and new loads such as heat pumps and e‑mobility. It is preparing its gas infrastructure for climate‑neutral gases, securing an option to connect its regional network in Emsland to Germany’s future hydrogen core network and supporting projects such as the Nautilus green hydrogen and e‑methanol plant in Friesoythe. EWE NETZ also cooperates with suppliers such as Siemens on fluorine‑free medium‑voltage switchgear and with OverIT to digitise workforce management across its grid operations, and has adopted group‑wide compliance and human‑rights standards to underpin responsible network operation and expansion.
