EuroAfrica Interconnector Limited is a private limited company incorporated in Cyprus (registration number HE 348576) on 5 November 2015 and based at Filippou 25, Quantum Tower, Agios Dometios, 2363, Nicosia. The company acts as the promoter and developer of the EuroAfrica Interconnector, a high‑voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable system designed to interconnect the electricity grids of Egypt, Cyprus and Greece. As project company it is responsible for feasibility and viability studies, permitting, contractual arrangements and coordination with transmission system operators and governments in the participating countries.
The EuroAfrica Interconnector project that the company develops is a 2,000 MW, ±400 kV HVDC link with an overall length of about 1,396–1,707 km, implemented in two main stages: an Egypt–Cyprus section and a Cyprus–Crete/Attica section. The route starts near Damietta in Egypt, connects to a converter station at Kofinou in Cyprus and then continues subsea to Korakia in Crete and onward to the Greek mainland. EuroAfrica Interconnector Limited has signed a framework agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company covering construction and commissioning, following viability studies that demonstrated the project’s benefits. The company has entered into strategic alliances with partners including Elia Grid International and has selected Siemens as preferred EPC contractor for the Egyptian converter station. Through this project, EuroAfrica Interconnector Limited aims to create the first major electricity interconnection between Africa and the European Union, ending Cyprus’s electrical isolation, enhancing regional energy security and enabling transmission of power generated from Egyptian gas reserves and renewable resources to European markets.
