Energinet is an independent public enterprise owned by the Danish state under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities. Headquartered in Fredericia with gas activities based in Ballerup, it owns, operates and develops the Danish transmission systems for electricity and gas, including the 400 kV, 150 kV and 132 kV power grids and the national gas transmission grid. The company also owns gas storage facilities, including Lille Torup in northern Jutland, has access to storage at Stenlille in Zealand, and co‑owns cross‑border electricity interconnectors to Norway, Sweden and Germany. Energinet operates the Great Belt Power Link and participates in further interconnection projects such as COBRAcable to the Netherlands and Viking Link to Great Britain, and is involved in grid connections for large offshore wind developments and energy islands such as Bornholm.
Energinet’s core tasks are to maintain high short‑ and long‑term security of supply, ensure efficient operation and development of electricity and gas infrastructure, and guarantee equal and transparent access for all users of the grids and energy markets. It runs electricity and gas markets and ancillary services, administers Danish support schemes for environmentally friendly power generation, and provides energy data services through platforms such as DataHub. The company is a central actor in Denmark’s green transition and sector coupling, working to integrate growing shares of wind, solar, biomethane and future hydrogen, and to use gas grids and storage to balance a 100% renewable energy system. Energinet engages extensively in research, development and international cooperation, including consultancy through Energinet Associated Activities and participation in bilateral energy partnerships. It aligns its operations with UN Global Compact principles and pursues strategies to limit its own environmental impact while enabling decarbonisation of the wider energy system.
