Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) is a publicly traded, integrated energy company headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany. Originating from mergers of regional utilities in Baden‑Württemberg, it has grown into one of Germany’s largest energy providers, supplying electricity, gas, water and energy-related services to around 5.5–6 million customers. The group operates along the full value chain, from generation and trading through transmission and distribution grids to retail supply, electromobility and telecommunications. Its business is organized into three main segments: Sustainable Generation Infrastructure, System Critical Infrastructure, and Smart Infrastructure for Customers, which together generated external revenue of €34.5 billion in 2024 with a workforce of about 30,400 employees.
EnBW’s asset base spans conventional and renewable power plants, district heating, and extensive electricity and gas networks. It operates a growing portfolio of onshore and offshore wind farms (including Baltic 1, Baltic 2, Hohe See and Albatros) and is constructing the 960 MW He Dreiht project in the North Sea, as well as co-developing large offshore wind projects such as Mona, Morgan and Morven in the UK. As of the end of 2024, renewables accounted for 6.6 GW or almost 59% of its generation capacity, with targets of 10–11.5 GW by 2030. EnBW is also a major e‑mobility player, running Germany’s largest fast‑charging network and, via SMATRICS EnBW, a nationwide network in Austria, supported by activities in markets including Denmark, Sweden, France, Turkey, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the UK.
Strategically, EnBW is investing up to €50 billion between 2024 and 2030, with roughly 60% directed to grid expansion and about 30% to renewables and hydrogen‑ready gas plants. It aims to phase out coal by 2028, substantially increase taxonomy‑aligned capex (around 89% in 2024), and pursue climate goals including climate neutrality around mid‑century, supported by extensive use of green financing instruments and a high share of green bonds in its funding mix.
