Enemalta plc is the leading energy services provider in the Maltese Islands, established in 1977 and entrusted with the distribution of electricity and the development of Malta’s national electricity distribution network. Headquartered in Marsa, it plans, operates and maintains the national grid, including transmission system reinforcement and beyond-the-meter power engineering services for industrial, commercial and domestic customers. Its core generation assets are concentrated at the Delimara Power Station complex at Marsaxlokk, where it operates emergency plants and coordinates dispatch from various units. Enemalta also utilises the Malta–Italy interconnector, a 200 MW high-voltage AC link to the Italian grid, as part of an efficient generation mix that combines gas‑fired plants, imported electricity and grid‑connected renewable energy sources.
Historically, Enemalta and its petroleum division handled the importation and distribution of petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas and jet fuel for Malta International Airport, as well as the generation and distribution of electricity. The company is majority‑owned by the Government of Malta, with Shanghai Electric holding a 33.3% minority stake under a strategic alliance that supported Enemalta’s financial restructuring, the conversion of oil‑fired capacity to gas, and joint expansion into European renewable energy markets, including the Mozura wind park project in Montenegro through Renewable Energy Development Ltd. Enemalta is implementing a strategic direction focused on modernising the grid with underground 11 kV cables, automation and data‑driven control, strengthening resilience and redundancy, integrating more renewables, and embedding safety and environmental considerations to support Malta’s energy transition and long‑term security of supply.
