Enel S.p.A. is an Italian multinational electric utility that manufactures and distributes electricity and gas. Established in 1962 as Italy’s national electricity board and later privatized, it is now a listed società per azioni on Borsa Italiana’s FTSE MIB index. The company is headquartered in Rome, with its main offices located on Viale Regina Margherita. As of 2024 it employed just over 60,000 people and the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance held about 23.6% of its share capital. Enel reports total generation capacity of about 93 GW, roughly 84% of which is from zero‑emission sources, and distributes power over a network of around 1.8 million kilometers serving more than 54 million households and businesses worldwide. Its activities span electricity generation, transmission and distribution, and natural gas distribution in roughly 28–30 countries across Europe, Latin America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
Operationally, Enel organizes its business along an integrated value chain. It develops, owns and operates renewable and thermal generation plants, manages large regulated electricity distribution grids that it is digitalizing into “smart grids,” and sells electricity and gas along with energy-related products and services to retail, business and public-sector customers. Through its Global Energy and Commodity Management division it participates in wholesale and financial energy markets. Enel has created specialist lines including Enel Green Power for renewables and Enel X for advanced energy and e‑mobility services, and owns regional platforms such as Enel North America and Enel Américas. Group strategy centers on accelerating the energy transition via electrification, expansion of renewable capacity and grids, and complete decarbonization of its energy mix, with a stated target of net zero emissions by 2040 and a multi‑year investment plan heavily focused on renewables and regulated networks.
