Enedis (formerly ERDF)

Enedis (formerly Électricité Réseau Distribution France, ERDF) is the electricity distribution system operator for most of France and a 100%‑owned but operationally independent subsidiary of EDF. Created in 2008 as part of the opening of the French electricity market, it manages the low- and medium‑voltage public distribution network and metering while suppliers handle energy contracts. The network, which belongs to French local authorities, is operated by Enedis under public service delegation. The company provides transparent and non‑discriminatory access to the grid for all users, under the supervision of the energy regulator CRE, and applies a code of conduct to safeguard commercially sensitive information. Enedis operates and develops around 1.3–1.4 million km of distribution lines, covering about 95% of continental France and serving roughly 36–38.8 million customers, with one million renewable producers connected. It runs nearly 1,000 local agencies grouped into 25 regional offices, coordinates grid operations via 31 control towers, and offers 24/7 fault response, including a dedicated rapid‑intervention force to manage weather‑related incidents. Its investment policy focuses on modernising and securing the network by undergrounding lines, dismantling exposed overhead conductors and improving outage performance. The company is central to France’s energy transition. It leads the nationwide deployment of Linky smart meters, targeting about 35 million installations and securing large meter supply contracts, and uses advanced information systems to enable automatic meter reading, new tariffs and data‑driven services. Enedis connects public EV charging infrastructure and operates a large internal electric vehicle fleet, participates in digital roaming platforms for charging, supports collective self‑consumption schemes, and plans new substations and grid reinforcements to integrate growing renewable generation and support regional industrial development.
