Elia Group is a European electricity transmission system operator whose core business is the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of high‑voltage grids in Belgium and in northern and eastern Germany. Built around the Belgian TSO Elia Transmission Belgium and the German TSO 50Hertz Transmission, the group transports electricity from generators to distribution system operators and large industrial consumers, manages grid infrastructure from 30 kV to 400 kV, and ensures real‑time balancing and congestion management across its control areas. Its networks, which include more than 19,000 km of high‑voltage connections on land and at sea, form an important cross‑border link between electricity markets in northern, eastern and southern Europe and achieve very high reliability levels. Elia also facilitates market operation through interconnectors and participation in European market coupling initiatives.
Beyond its regulated grid activities, Elia Group has developed several specialised platforms. Elia Grid International provides engineering and consulting services worldwide on power system planning, operation, markets and HVDC and offshore solutions, drawing on the expertise of the parent TSOs. WindGrid, a dedicated subsidiary created to support offshore expansion, develops and operates offshore transmission assets and interconnectors, including hybrid interconnectors and energy‑island concepts that link offshore wind farms and multiple onshore grids; it also partners with utilities such as PPL in New England on offshore wind integration. The group pursues an extensive investment programme – including tens of billions of euros in grid reinforcements, offshore hubs like Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Island, and projects such as the Bornholm Energy Island link – while running a broad innovation portfolio that uses AI, robotics, drones and advanced analytics to optimise asset management and system operations. Through these activities Elia Group positions itself as a key enabler of Europe’s energy transition and decarbonisation agenda.
