Electricidade dos Açores (EDA) is a privately held electricity utility headquartered in Ponta Delgada in the Azores, Portugal. It generates and distributes electricity across the Autonomous Region of the Azores, supplying residents, businesses and professional customers. The company operates as an integrated provider, combining power generation, grid operation and retail supply, and is subject to cost regulation by ERSE for its power plants in the region. EDA’s generation portfolio spans hydroelectricity, geothermal, wind and thermal assets, and it distributes electricity through islanded networks on each of the nine inhabited islands. EDP became a strategic shareholder in EDA in 1999 under a cooperation agreement. The European Union has also supported the company through grant funding.
EDA owns and operates multiple onshore wind farms on islands including Flores, Graciosa, São Jorge, Faial and Terceira, and manages geothermal facilities such as the Pico Vermelho Geothermal Power Station. It also operates thermoelectric power plants, including Pico, Santa Bárbara and Caldeirão, where it has invested in continuous emissions monitoring systems and associated measurement, control and operator training. On Terceira, EDA is investing in a 15 MW battery energy storage system integrated with a Siemens microgrid management platform to increase renewable penetration, improve grid flexibility and reduce diesel consumption and CO2 emissions. The utility emphasizes sustainability, regulatory compliance, customer support and stakeholder engagement, and positions the Azorean grid as a testbed for decarbonisation, hosting and co-organising initiatives such as the Clean energy for EU islands forum and broader clean energy transition projects in the archipelago.
