Baltic Cable AB is a Swedish transmission system operator that owns and operates the Baltic Cable, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea interconnector between Sweden and Germany. Headquartered in Malmö, it controls a 250–262 kilometre, 600 MW, 450 kV monopolar HVDC link running between Kruseberg/Västra Kärrstorp in southern Sweden and Lübeck-Herrenwyk in Germany, with converter stations at both ends. The cable, commissioned in 1994 and built with technology supplied by ABB, is the only interconnector between price zones SE4 (Sweden 4) and DE-LU (Germany/Luxembourg). Baltic Cable AB is 100% owned by Statkraft Asset Holding AS and has been certified as an independent transmission system operator under the German Energy Industry Act. It is classified as an interconnector TSO rather than a distribution or supply company and has no directly connected generation or consumption customers, outsourcing physical operation of the link to E.ON Energidistribution AB and TenneT TSO GmbH.
The company’s core activity is to provide cross-border transmission capacity and system services while ensuring fair, transparent and non-discriminatory market functioning. It is fully market coupled, with day-ahead trading performed through Nord Pool’s European Market Coupling Operator, and is preparing to join Single Intraday Coupling so its capacity can be traded closer to real time. Baltic Cable AB participates in the Capacity Calculation Region Hansa alongside neighbouring TSOs and cooperates with ENTSO-E to meet EU regulatory obligations. Through its Malmö-based technical, commercial, legal/regulatory and security teams and a Brussels-facing policy presence, it promotes European market integration, supports EU sustainability and climate objectives by facilitating the exchange of renewable and carbon-free electricity, and works to strengthen operational security of the interconnected German and Swedish transmission systems. Under a newer strategic focus as an investor in European interconnectors, it has agreed to acquire subsea interconnector Greenlink between Ireland and Great Britain together with Equitix.
