Agder Energi AS, now renamed Å Energi AS following its 2022 merger with Glitre Energi, is a Norwegian, municipally dominated energy group headquartered in Kristiansand. It operates as Norway’s largest vertically integrated renewable energy utility, active across the full value chain from power generation and grid operations to trading and end-customer supply. Hydropower is the core of the business: the group now owns or part-owns around 72–83 hydropower plants with an annual production of roughly 11.3–13 TWh, building on Agder Energi’s earlier portfolio of 49 plants producing about 8 TWh per year. Å Energi’s grid subsidiary Glitre Nett runs one of Norway’s largest electricity networks, around 30,000–40,000 km in length, supplying power to more than 300,000 distribution customers, while retail brands such as Å Strøm and Entelios serve around 320,000 household customers and manage roughly 20–30 TWh annually for business and industrial clients across the Nordics and wider Europe.
The group is organised into hydropower, grid, renewable management, customer and digital solutions, and new industry business areas, supported by a parent company and a dedicated investment arm (Å Invest) for energy-related ventures. Å Energi is expanding its portfolio in offshore wind, solar power, hydrogen and energy storage, exemplified by its consortium with Vårgrønn and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group to bid for large-scale offshore wind in Norway’s Sørlige Nordsjø II and by long-term hydropower PPAs with data centre operators. It invests heavily in upgrading hydropower and grid infrastructure, including projects such as Åseral Nord and Skjerka, and has collaborated with partners like Microsoft and Powel on intelligent cloud-based grid solutions. The company underpins its growth with green bond financing and a sustainability framework aligned with the UN Global Compact, emphasising increased renewable output, efficient grid delivery and development of new energy services for Norwegian and Nordic markets.
