J.A. Rederiet, also referred to as J.A. Shipping, is a Danish shipowning company providing services to the maritime offshore industry with origins dating back to 1986. Founded by Jens Alfastsen, the business developed from shore-based machining, diving and salvage activities into a fleet-based operation, acquiring its first dedicated dive support and light salvage vessel in 1989 and a first tug over 20 GT in 1993. Over subsequent years the company built up a tug fleet and, from 2005, added a floating crane for heavylift work, shifting its focus towards special craft, heavylift, salvage, offshore support and dive support. In a generational handover on 1 January 2009, Captain Kim Alfastsen became CEO and sole owner, with Jens Alfastsen continuing in an office and project management role.
The company is based at the Port of Nyborg, Denmark, where it operates an office, fully equipped workshop, storage facilities and yard that support project development and vessel mobilisation. J.A. Rederiet specialises in offshore wind, salvages and wreck removal, and special offshore projects delivered as turnkey solutions including bespoke tools and equipment. Its DP1/DP2 multi‑purpose vessels, rebuilt for offshore work by 2017, are employed on a wide range of offshore wind and grid-related tasks such as UXO and boulder clearance, debris removal, CPT and vibrocorer campaigns, ROV surveys, noise mitigation using double big bubble curtains, and cable route and cable protection support for projects including Anholt, Riffgat, Borkum Riffgrund, Nordsee Ost, Meerwind Süd, Baltic 1, Baltic 2, Wikinger, Arkona, Veja Mate, Nordergründe and the Cluster Westlich Adlergrund. Clients have included contractors and TSOs such as Per Aarsleff, Fugro, Baltic Taucher, Boskalis, 50Hertz, TenneT, OMM and Prysmian.
Beyond offshore wind, J.A. Rederiet undertakes heavylift, salvage, towage and offshore dive support work, and in 2024 it was awarded an Energinet Eltransmission contract for protection of submarine cables near Copenhagen, covering UXO and archaeological investigations, trench excavation and backfilling, and protection of existing crossings. The company operates as a flexible project partner able to respond to client-specific requirements on a 24/7 basis. Its activities are underpinned by an environmental management system certified to ISO 14001:2015 for the administration and management of ship operations in providing services to the maritime offshore industry, and it states that its DP vessels are designed to achieve a comparatively low CO2 footprint. Experienced personnel with backgrounds in diving, salvage and offshore operations support delivery of tailored solutions across its core segments.
