On 16 May 2007, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) issued the original SeeAnlV Genehmigung to Ventotec Ost 2 KG for the construction and operation of 80 wind turbines at the offshore wind farm then named "Ventotec Ost 2" (later renamed Wikinger) in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (AWZ) of the Baltic Sea, approximately 35 km northeast of Rügen on a 34 km² project area in water depths of 32-42 m. The application had been filed on 19 September 2002 by Arcadis Consult GmbH (Rostock). The project was subsequently acquired by Iberdrola Renovables, who applied for amended consent reducing the layout to 70 turbines (approved 28 September 2015). The as-built project comprises 70 Adwen AD 5-135 turbines (350 MW) on jacket foundations; construction began in March 2016, the first turbine was installed in February 2017, and the wind farm entered trial operation on 29 December 2017 with official inauguration in October 2018.
