On 11 March 2025, SSEN Transmission submitted a Town and Country Planning Act 1997 planning application to The Highland Council for the Fanellan 400kV AC substation and HVDC converter station, located southwest of Beauly. The Fanellan hub is the mainland end of the Western Isles HVDC Link and provides the HVDC converter, the 400 kV AC interface and the connection point into the existing Beauly to Denny 400 kV overhead line. The application followed three years of project development and engagement, including four pre-application consultation events held during 2024 attended by over 300 people, and was identified by SSEN as a "key strategic development" supporting the UK and Scottish 2030 clean power and offshore wind targets. This is the second main onshore consent for the Western Isles HVDC Link after the Lewis Hub planning application submitted to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar one week later on 18 March 2025.
