On 31 August 2009, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) issued the SeeAnlV Genehmigung to Cuxhaven Steel Construction GmbH — a BARD Engineering group company — for the construction and operation of the Veja Mate offshore wind farm in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (AWZ) of the North Sea, approximately 90 km northwest of Borkum on the Dutch border. The approval covered an approximately 50 km² project area in water depths of 39-41 m and originally authorised 80 BARD 5.0 turbines (400 MW). The project was the second BARD Group wind farm consented by BSH after BARD Offshore 1, and was designed as its direct neighbour and continuation. BARD's initial plan envisaged first turbines feeding into the grid by end of 2011. The project later passed through several owners (including Highland Group, then a consortium led by Siemens Project Ventures / Commerz Real / Ingka / wpd-invest / KGAL) before completion, with the as-built configuration using 67 Siemens SWT 6.0-154 turbines (402 MW) on monopile foundations. Veja Mate exported first power in mid-2017 and entered commercial operation in February 2018.
