In May 2022, Terna submitted to Italy's Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITE) the formal authorization request for the construction and operation of the West section of the Tyrrhenian Link, the 480 km HVDC submarine link between Sicily (Fiumetorto, Termini Imerese) and Sardinia (Terra Mala, Selargius). The filing followed the public-consultation phase Terna had opened in September 2021 across the affected municipalities of Termini Imerese (Palermo) and Maracalagonis, Quartucciu, Quartu S. Elena, Selargius, Settimo San Pietro and Sinnai (Cagliari). On the basis of six "Terna Incontra" engagement events with institutions and local communities, Terna identified the locations for the future converter stations and the buried-cable routes from the subsea landings: in Sardinia, the buried cables would run mainly along existing roads for approximately 30 km from Terra Mala to Selargius; in Sicily, the buried cables would run 7 km from Fiumetorto to Contrada Caracoli (Termini Imerese), siting the converter station next to the existing substation. The filing initiated the conferenze dei servizi process, with the definitive authorisation decree expected by mid-2023. The west-branch consent was ultimately granted by MASE in September 2023.
