Effective 28 January 2022, the Norwegian and Danish TSOs Statnett and Energinet reversed the primary direction of the Skagerrak interconnection (SK1–SK4) and reset its asymmetric capacity allocation. Denmark's export capacity to Norway was raised to 1,634 MW (primary direction), while imports from Norway were capped at 1,100 MW (secondary direction). The reconfiguration replaced the earlier asymmetric pattern in place since October 2020, when Norway-to-Denmark had been the primary direction at 1,450 MW. The change was based on calculations of wider socio-economic benefit and was published as a market message ahead of go-live. The restriction was scheduled to remain in place until end-June 2023, with capacity continuing to be constrained until the planned replacement of parts of the faulty Danish land cable on Skagerrak 4. Total system capacity transiently fell to 802 MW in both directions from 26 January 2022 while the switchover was completed, before settling at the new 1,634/1,100 MW configuration.
