On 3 July 2020, Marine Scotland Licensing Operations Team issued Marine Licences 07203/20/0 (within 12 nautical miles) and 07357/20/0 (outside 12 nautical miles) to Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Plc, authorising installation of the high-voltage direct current link cable between Shetland and Caithness. The licences were granted under Part 4 of the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 and Part 4 of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 following the applicant's March 2020 application. The award authorised the offshore works for the 260 km subsea HVDC link between Weisdale Voe (Shetland) and Noss Head (Caithness), subject to subsequent post-consent plans covering construction methodology, environmental management, cable burial and protection, marine mammal protection, and emergency spill response. The licence period runs to 2 July 2025.
