The Romulo HVDC submarine interconnection between Sagunto (Valencia) and Santa Ponsa (Mallorca) was returned to service at 14:45 on Tuesday 29 April 2025, restoring the electrical link between the Balearic Islands and the peninsular Spanish grid after more than 26 hours of outage following the 28 April Iberian blackout. According to Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the reconnection was achieved through the sequenced unblocking of the two poles of the submarine cable, a process executed between 14:14 and 14:45 hours. Once the link was re-established, almost 20% of Balearic electricity demand was once again being covered from the peninsular grid by late afternoon. The Govern of the Balearic Islands subsequently downgraded the Plan Territorial de Protección Civil (Platerbal) from level 1 as telecommunications and emergency-services access progressively normalised across the archipelago.
