The Romulo HVDC submarine interconnection between Sagunto (Valencia) and Santa Ponsa (Calvià, Mallorca) was taken out of service at 12:33 on Monday 28 April 2025, coincident with the onset of the major peninsular Iberian blackout that affected large parts of mainland Spain and Portugal. During the disconnection — which ultimately lasted more than 26 hours — the Balearic electricity system operated autonomously on local generation. Red Eléctrica de España (REE) reported that no relevant incidents in supply were observed on the islands and that the Balearic system continued to operate under conditions of normality and security throughout the event. The fault was systemic rather than asset-specific: both poles of the link were locked out as a protective response to the peninsular grid collapse, not as a result of a cable, converter or substation failure on the Romulo asset itself.
