By October 2022, when the AO7 tender was launched, French authorities had defined the Oléron 1 project site as a designated maritime zone about 40 km off Oléron Island in the Bay of Biscay, covering up to 180 km² in around 60-metre water depths and located outside the nearby marine natural park.
