A technical fault in the rectifier system at the onshore facility on the Norwegian side of North Sea Link rendered the interconnector unavailable on the afternoon of Thursday 8 June 2023. At the time of the fault, electricity was flowing from Norway towards the UK, and the sudden loss of transfer caused a drop in grid frequency in GB that was handled routinely through generation regulation. Statnett reported that a component in the onshore facility required replacement before the link could be returned to full service. Pending the repair, the interconnector was operated at half capacity (700 MW). Statnett did not initially confirm a date by which the repair would be completed.
