In March 2022, the Dutch government formally designated Nederwiek as one of three new offshore wind energy areas in the North Sea, alongside Lagelander and Doordewind, doubling planned national offshore wind capacity to around 21 GW by 2030 and establishing the wind energy zone within which the 2 GW Nederwiek III site will be developed.
