PowerFix JV was awarded the EPC contract for the supply and installation of a 132 kV variable shunt reactor at the Magħtab Terminal Station for the Malta–Sicily Cable Link 2 (IC2). The scope covers manufacture and installation of the 132 kV variable shunt reactor — designed for the 50–120 MVAr operating range — plus associated civil works at the Magħtab terminal where IC2 ties into the Maltese 132 kV network operated by Enemalta. The shunt reactor compensates the reactive power generated by the 220 kV HVAC subsea cable and improves system efficiency. The signing of this final EPC contract marks the transition of IC2 from the design, permitting and procurement phase into full-scale execution, with all main supply and installation packages now in place across the Maltese and Sicilian sides of the link. Civil works at Magħtab under this contract were expected to commence in the first weeks of 2026 alongside the broader build-out of the terminal station's hybrid switchgear and cable terminations. The award was issued by InterConnect Malta (ICM), the government-owned promoter of IC2, as part of the €300 million programme co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. PowerFix JV joins Nexans (subsea cable), SELT (onshore cable), AG Installations with BEST (220 kV transformer and shunt reactors), and Terna Rete Italia (switchgear) in the IC2 contractor stack.
