BEST is supplying the 245 kV 1×250 MVA autotransformer and 1×120 MVAr and 1×240 MVAr variable shunt reactors for the Malta–Sicily Cable Link 2 (IC2) under the design, supply and installation contract held by main contractor AG Installations (re-issued tender CT3004/2024 by InterConnect Malta). The equipment is manufactured at BEST's transformer plant in Turkey, with deliveries split between the Magħtab Terminal Station (Malta) and the Ragusa 220 kV substation (Sicily) sides of the new HVAC interconnector. Manufacturing started in February 2026 at the BEST facility, with Factory Acceptance Tests on the high-voltage equipment in Turkey completed in April 2026 alongside FATs on the first half of the Nexans submarine cable in the USA. The autotransformer steps voltages between the 245 kV interconnector level and downstream system voltages, while the variable shunt reactors compensate the substantial reactive power generated by the 99 km HVAC subsea cable, an essential element for stable operation of long AC submarine links. The total contract scope delivered through AG Installations is reported at €20.2 million. BEST is one of Turkey's largest power-transformer manufacturers and frequently subcontracts to international EPC contractors on HV substation projects across Europe and the Middle East.
