On 25 February 2025, in the presence of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), TAQA Transmission (part of TAQA Group) and Italy's Eni S.p.A. signed a framework agreement to progress the tripartite strategic partnership signed by Italy, Albania and the UAE at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025. The framework establishes a collaborative basis for a long-term power off-take agreement in Italy covering renewable electricity to be produced in Albania and transmitted through the planned cross-border subsea interconnection between Albania and Italy. Signatories were Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi (Masdar CEO), Jasim Husain Thabet (TAQA Group CEO) and Claudio Descalzi (Eni CEO). Under the tripartite initiative, Masdar and TAQA Transmission were named as the designated UAE entities; Albanian state power company KESH (Korporata Elektroenergjitike Shqiptare) and transmission system operator OST were named as the designated Albanian entities; Eni was identified as the preferred potential off-taker for the renewable energy to be delivered through the Adriatic cable. The framework agreement is a pre-FID structuring step focused on cross-border renewable energy cooperation, energy security, sustainable development and accelerating the Mediterranean region's energy transformation. The agreement does not itself commit a final off-take volume or pricing.
