Siemens Energy was contracted by TenneT to supply the 220/380 kV power transformers for the Hollandse Kust Noord onshore substation at Wijk aan Zee, the landside transformer station that steps up power from the project's two 220 kV AC export cable circuits to 380 kV for injection into the Dutch national high-voltage grid via Beverwijk. The first transformer arrived in IJmuiden port on 20 October 2021 having been manufactured at Siemens Energy's Austrian transformer factory and shipped to the Netherlands. The transformers each weigh approximately 260 tonnes and were installed inside noise-insulating structures at the Wijk aan Zee site. Two transformers are deployed exclusively for the Hollandse Kust Noord connection (with four more transformers delivered in subsequent batches for the paired Hollandse Kust West Alpha and West Beta connections that share the Wijk aan Zee/Beverwijk station). The second HKN transformer arrived and was installed during November 2021. In addition to the power transformers, Siemens Energy also supplied two 220 kV switchyard reactors installed in late October/early November 2021 to compensate for capacitive losses from the long-length export cable connections.
