In January 2024, Terna presented the results of the formal public consultation on the GR.ITA 2 Italy–Greece HVDC interconnection. The consultation, launched in October 2023 under EU Regulation 869/2022, ran across the seven Province of Lecce municipalities affected by the project route — Galatina (host of the new converter station), Sternatia, Soleto, Martignano, Calimera, Carpignano Salentino and Melendugno (cable landfall). The presentation closed the 60-day formal stakeholder engagement window and consolidated input on the proposed converter station siting at Galatina, the onshore underground DC cable corridor and the cable landfall at Melendugno, paving the way for subsequent permitting submissions to the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE). The consultation results presentation marked the formal closure of the EU 869/2022 consultation phase and a transition into the design and permitting workstreams that IPTO and Terna would later activate jointly under the May 2025 Memorandum of Understanding.
