GREGY was included in the European Union's first Pact for the Mediterranean Action Plan, formally presented by the European Commission to EU Member States and Southern Mediterranean partner representatives on 17 April 2026. The Action Plan, the first edition under the Pact for the Mediterranean (adopted by the College in October 2025 and launched at ministerial level on 28 November 2025), groups more than 100 initiatives covering the EU's relationship with 10 partner countries in North Africa and the Middle East, with renewable energy and clean technology as a core pillar. GREGY's inclusion is described by Elica Interconnector CEO John Karydas as one of several EU-priority designations alongside the December 2025 PCI/PMI list, the Global Gateway framework, and ENTSO-E's TYNDP 2024 — collectively underscoring the European Commission's view of the 3,000 MW Egypt-Greece HVDC link as strategic infrastructure for European energy independence, diversification of supply away from natural gas exposure, and regional cooperation across the Mediterranean.
