NKT — the original 2014 export-cable manufacturer for the Gemini offshore wind farm — was called back to the project in summer 2024 to lead the jointing of a replacement cable section after one of the two 220 kV AC export cables linking the Buitengaats and ZeeEnergie offshore substations to the onshore transformer station at Eemshaven was damaged in June 2024 and taken out of service. NKT's repair team executed the subsea jointing operation that spliced the new replacement section into the existing 85 km cable corridor between the wind farm and the Dutch coast, working alongside Rijkswaterstaat, RG-projecten (project management) and the project insurers to coordinate the offshore campaign. The repair restored the integrity of the damaged export link and was completed sufficiently quickly to bring the second export cable back into service on 4 September 2024, after which Gemini returned to its full 600 MW export capability. NKT framed the campaign as a complex subsea repair that drew on specialist skills the company had built across its long history of HVAC and HVDC cable installation, and reinforced its long-term relationship with the Northland Power-led Gemini consortium. The 2024 repair scope is distinct from NKT's original 2014 €165 million cable supply and manufacturing contract.
