In June 2024 one of the two 220 kV AC export cables linking the Gemini offshore wind farm to the onshore transformer station at Eemshaven was damaged and taken out of service, partially reducing the 600 MW project's export capacity. Throughout the outage period Gemini continued to generate and export power via the surviving second export cable while a repair campaign was mobilised by majority-owner Northland Power and its consortium partners. Northland disclosed in its Q3 2024 results that Gemini's quarterly electricity production fell to 377 GWh — down from 467 GWh in Q3 2023 and below the facility's historical Q3 average of 440 GWh — and that adjusted EBITDA at the offshore wind business fell by roughly C$19 million primarily due to the Gemini cable damage. Northland characterised the incident as isolated and stated that expected insurance proceeds would result in minimal full-year EBITDA and free cash flow impact. Project management for the export-cable preparation and repair works was provided by RG-projecten, with cable jointing executed by an NKT-led team coordinated with Rijkswaterstaat, Dutch authorities and the project insurers. The cable was successfully re-energised on 4 September 2024, restoring Gemini to full operations.
