Gemini

Gemini is a large-scale Dutch offshore wind development sited in the North Sea comprising two adjacent fields (Buitengaats and ZeeEnergie). The project was developed by a consortium led by Northland Power and built between financial close in 2014 and full commissioning in 2017. Constructed under a single EPC programme led by Van Oord, Gemini combined industrial-scale supply-chain contracts (notably Siemens turbines and NKT export cables) with jacket-mounted offshore substations and a developer-managed land high-voltage station at Eemshaven. The project was notable for its scale and financing: headline construction cost estimates centred around €2.8bn and the transaction used a mix of senior bank debt, export-credit support and subordinated loans to reach financial close. Operational delivery overcame an initially delayed start to achieve first generation in 2016 and full completion in 2017; Northland reports the project was completed on schedule and under budget. Commercially, ownership sits with a consortium (Northland ~60% with other partners holding the remainder) and long-term offtake arrangements and subsidy mechanisms underpinned bankability. In-service operations have been broadly stable, with industry-standard O&M arrangements and a rapid subsea cable repair completed in 2024 after an export-cable fault. Gemini’s integrated developer-led grid connection to shore and large export-cable package made it a material late-2010s example of a developer-resourced Dutch connection scheme and a template for large fixed-bottom offshore projects in the region.
