In July 2017, East Devon District Council granted FAB Link Limited outline planning permission for the HVDC converter station near Exeter airport, the GB landside terminal of the proposed cross-Channel HVDC interconnector. The application had been submitted in December 2016 and reflected the original 1,400 MW scheme design. Outline permission established the principle of converter-station development on the site, with detailed matters to be approved via subsequent reserved-matters or full applications. The converter station sits at the head of the onshore HVDC cable corridor running from the Budleigh Salterton landfall up to National Grid's Exeter 400 kV substation. The 2017 outline permission was later superseded by the full planning permission granted in October 2023 for the updated 1,250 MW design at the adjacent Harriers Court Industrial Estate site.
