In July 2018, the States of Alderney issued FAB Link Limited a FEPA (Food and Environment Protection Act) Licence covering the offshore cable route within Alderney territorial waters. The FEPA Licence authorises deposit of substances and articles in the sea bed associated with installation and protection of the subsea HVDC cables and the parallel fibre-optic cable. The Alderney consent had been pursued in parallel with a separate FEPA route application to the States of Guernsey for an alternative routing outside Alderney waters; in May 2018 it was confirmed that the alternative route did not require a FEPA Licence. The Alderney-route licence remains relevant for the part of the cable path falling within Alderney's territorial waters. The 2022 final route selection ultimately decided not to make landfall on Alderney itself, but the offshore licence covers the seabed crossing.
