Jan De Nul was commissioned by Eneco in October 2021 to carry out a major maintenance / reburial campaign on the Luchterduinen 150 kV export cable. Morphological seabed changes near Noordwijk had reduced the burial depth of the nearshore section of the live export cable below the cover required to keep the asset protected, prompting Eneco to request a targeted reburial. Jan De Nul executed the campaign using its modified intertidal trencher Sunfish, working in approximately 8.5 m of water and reaching up to about 1 kilometre offshore from the Noordwijk landfall. The vessel reburied the cable to a minimum depth of 2.5 m below the seabed, using SMD's Artemis cable-tracking system (subcontracted by Jan De Nul) to locate the energised cable in real time so that the wind farm could remain in operation throughout the campaign. The reburial was successfully completed without the wind farm needing to be shut down, restoring the design level of cable protection. The work showcased Sunfish as a purpose-modified tool for nearshore/intertidal reburial where conventional offshore trenchers cannot operate safely, and reinforced Jan De Nul's positioning in maintenance interventions on operational subsea cable assets.
