In approximately November 2022, The Rich North Sea programme, together with Eneco and marine contractor Van Oord, installed four oyster tables at the operational Eneco Luchterduinen offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea. The tables are structures made of concrete and other materials on which live flat oysters are placed, based on an innovative design developed over four years of research. This is the first time this design has been used in practice. The tables were installed within the wind farm to help restore flat oyster reefs and enhance marine biodiversity around the turbines. Following installation in 2022, the project partners are now conducting ongoing monitoring of the oyster tables, including techniques such as e-DNA sampling and larval collection, to track oyster survival, reproduction, structural stability and surrounding biodiversity at the Luchterduinen site.
