On 13 May 2025, Prysmian Group christened the cable-laying vessel Prysmian Monna Lisa at its Pikkala site in Finland and unveiled the completed capacity expansion of its Pikkala submarine cable plant. Both assets directly underpin Prysmian's delivery of the c.1,000 km of 525 kV HVDC subsea and underground cable contracted to Eastern Green Link 2 Limited under the February 2024 €1.9 billion award. The over €200 million Pikkala factory extension adds a vertical continuous vulcanisation (VCV) line — housed in Finland's tallest building at 185 metres — capable of producing approximately 1 km of HVDC 525 kV submarine cable per day, and is the principal manufacturing route for EGL2 subsea cable. The Prysmian Monna Lisa is a 171 m DP3 cable-laying vessel with 7,000-tonne and 10,000-tonne carousels, simultaneous lay-and-bury capability and burial tools rated beyond 3,000 m water depth; its environmental design includes a 3 MW battery hybrid system, high-voltage shore connection and SCR-equipped generators ready for biodiesel blends. Vessel construction completion was subsequently confirmed in EGL2's own one-year delivery update (September 2025). Together the vessel and the factory expansion secure the project's principal cable supply chain ahead of the EGL2 cable installation campaign planned for 2027-2028, with energisation targeted in 2029.
