On 4 December 2020, following a public debate on offshore wind in the Manche Est – Mer du Nord area, the French Minister for Ecological Transition decided to proceed with development of an offshore wind project and its grid connection in the newly defined 500 km² 'Centre Manche' zone in the French exclusive economic zone off the Cotentin Peninsula, formally identifying this area as a priority offshore wind development zone that later hosts the Centre Manche 2 project.
