TenneT, as the offshore transmission system operator for the Netherlands, delivered the offshore grid connection used by the Borssele III & IV offshore wind farm (Blauwwind consortium). The wind farm’s generated electricity was connected to the Dutch onshore transmission system via TenneT’s standardised 700 MW offshore grid connection concept for the Borssele zone. For Borssele III & IV specifically, TenneT provided the Borssele Beta offshore transformer platform (offshore substation), which functioned as the collection and step-up point for the wind farm’s 66 kV internal array network prior to export to shore at 220 kV and onward integration into the national grid. This offshore substation and associated grid connection infrastructure enabled Blauwwind to transmit power from the project area to the existing onshore high-voltage infrastructure at Borssele. TenneT’s grid connection scope sat alongside the developer’s and EPC contractors’ wind farm build scopes and was a prerequisite for safe commissioning and energisation of the project. The Borssele Beta connection was also described as part of the broader ‘Net op zee Borssele’ programme, which established offshore substations and subsea cable routes to connect multiple Borssele-area wind farms to the Dutch electricity network.
